Southwest Waterfront
Plans are under way for the redevelopment of a one-mile strip along the Washington Channel with a waterfront promenade as the highlight of this 47-acre site. The city’s draft master plan calls for a mixed-use development with 770 residential units (the number of condominiums and apartments are unknown), 14 acres of open space, 180,000 square feet of cultural space, a 400-room hotel, 85,000 square feet of office space, 230,000 square feet of retail space, and 2,000 parking spaces. The master planner for the project is Ehrenkrantz Eckstut & Kuhn Architects. Here is the vision.
In September 2006, the District of Columbia announced the selection of the development team of PN Hoffman and Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse to develop the Southwest Waterfront. They were one of two finalists selected In mid-August 2006 by the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation (AWC) for what was initially estimated as a $500 million project. In early June 2006, AWC selected 5 development teams as finalists among the 17 teams that responded to the Request for Expressions of Interest of March 1, 2006.
